Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association

About the Association

The Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association (APMAA) is a dynamic community of accounting scholars and practitioners committed to advancing excellence in management accounting research, education, and practice. Since our founding in 2004, we have earned a distinguished reputation through innovative research, high-quality publications, and active international engagement.

Our membership and leadership reflect broad gender and geographic diversity, creating an environment that encourages collaboration, intellectual exchange, and innovation. Through teaching, research, and a strong professional network, APMAA contributes to shaping the future of management accounting and continues to serve as a thought leader in the field.

Mission

APMAA provides a platform for management accounting academics and practitioners across the Asia-Pacific region to enhance their contributions to global scholarship and improve the well-being of people throughout the region. We achieve this by fostering worldwide connections that support communication, learning, and the sharing of management accounting knowledge in education, research, and practice.

Vision

APMAA aims to create and disseminate academic and professional knowledge through research conducted at member universities and industries. Our vision is to establish APMAA as a premier international organization in management and accounting studies.

Objectives

(Revised on January 5, 2021)
The association pursues the following objectives:

  • Advance truth in management and accounting fields and develop a reliable information resource center
  • Support members in conducting cutting-edge research by offering research development sessions at our annual conferences
  • Promote globalized, high-level research and education by integrating both Eastern and Western perspectives
  • Strengthen worldwide scholarly networks and provide platforms for disseminating research through our annual conferences and The Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Journal
  • Increase the practical relevance of academic work by encouraging descriptive research on management accounting practices
  • Recognize outstanding scholars and pioneering researchers who address emerging issues and technologies in management accounting
  • Enhance collaboration and knowledge exchange between academics and practitioners at national and international levels

Background of the Association

The Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association (APMAA), established in 2004, is the leading association of scholars and specialists in management and accounting across the region. The idea for the association was first proposed at the Asian Management Forum held on November 3–4, 2002, in Fukuoka, Japan. Founding members from various Asia-Pacific countries shared a common vision of advancing management and accounting research and practice with a regional focus.

At the second Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Forum, held on November 24–25, 2004, in Malaysia, the founding members unanimously agreed to formally establish APMAA with two primary objectives:

  1. To promote the advancement of management accounting theory and practice, with particular emphasis on Asia-Pacific issues
  2. To organize forums and conferences and to publish The Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Journal (APMAJ)

Professor Dr. Akira Nishimura served as APMAAfs first President from its establishment until 2009. On January 1, 2010, Professor Dr. Susumu Ueno assumed the presidency. Following APMAAfs governance renewal on January 1, 2014, Professor Dr. Ueno became the first Chair of the Board of Directors, a leadership role he continues to hold today.
