APMAA holds 15th annual conference

November 06 2019 12:43 AM

The Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association (APMAA) held its 15th Annual Conference this week at Qatar University (QU), under the theme, “Management Accounting and Finance in the 21st Century: Challenges and Perspectives.”
This is the first time the conference was held in a GCC country.
The conference was held under the patronage of HE Sheikh Abdulla bin Saoud al-Thani, governor of Qatar Central Bank and organised by QU’s College of Business and Economics.
The conference welcomed 300 participants and more than 150 scientific papers were presented.
The scope of the APMAA 2019 conference was to celebrate the new theoretical and practical developments in management accounting and managerial finance of the 21st century with particular attention to Asia-Pacific and GCC accounting issues.
As the GCC oil-based economy is in transition to a more sustainable knowledge-based economic model, there is an eager motivation to actively investigate contemporary issues related to management accounting and finance.
“Supporting academic research, especially in the area of accounting and finance, is an essential pillar for achieving economic diversification in Qatar. This is with the larger goal of achieving sustainable economic development in the long-term, which is part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, a vision that has been translated into a set of objectives and programmes through the National Development Strategy 2011–2016, which is considered a first step,” QU president Dr Hassan al-Derham said.
He added that the university’s participation in organising and hosting this conference is a clear demonstration of the university’s commitment to the development of the accounting and financial professions.
The conference represents the largest scientific gathering in the field of accounting and finance in Asia, and is attended by a group of researchers and experts from around the world such as Australia, Japan, China, Malaysia and other Asian, European and North American countries.
The main goal of the APMAA annual conference was to bring together researchers and practitioners to exchange theories, ideas, techniques and experiences relating to all aspects of management and business accounting.

Dear Dean Dr Adam Fadlalla,

With a lot of good
memories, I left Doha and returned home Thursday afternoon. Thanks to your support, APMAA could complete the 15th anniversary conference with great success. In fact, the size and quality of the conference were beyond my expectations. The conference was extremely well-organized. All participants could learn a lot not only from parallel sessions but also keynote speeches and panel sessions being prepared by the conference organizer.

The bus tour on the final day helped us to learn much about the history, culture, and strong economy of Qatar and the city of Doha. Rooms and facilities at Mondrian Doha Hotel were very comfortable. The conference participants enjoyed all the minutes of their stay in Doha. I am grateful that APMAA 2019 could set up a new milestone in our annual conference history.

I know that Dr Mohammed Elgammal and all the faculty and staff at College of Business and Economics spent much time and worked so hard in preparing this conference for the past four years.

APMAA2019@Doha - Great Leadership, Superb Contents & Splendid Hospitality

APMAA Conference 2019 marked the 15th anniversary of the Asia Pacific Management Accounting Association.  The “anniversary celebration” was made perfect by the Qatar University team, which was led by Prof. Dr. Mohammed Elgammal, by showcasing three very important elements of excellence - “Great Leadership”, “Superb Conference Contents” and simply “Splendid Hospitality”.  The 15th APMAA 2019 conference conferred the Extraordinary Service Awards to two of its senior directors, Prof Paul Scarbrough (Canada) and Prof Jan Alpenberg (Sweden) during a special welcome dinner at Mondrian Hotel.  The well-thought off conference contents gave participants a lot of great memories and opportunities to forge international networking with other international members who attended the conference.  One very notable experience during my 6-days stay, was that “you can never go hungry in Doha”.  Prof Mohammed Elgammal and his team made sure that we were well fed during breakfast, tea, lunch and dinner.  Besides the conference, I enjoyed the visits to Aspire Academy, the stadium, the Company House and Souq Waqif.  Team Qatar, you have left Big Shoes for us the Malaysian team to fill.  Nevertheless, congratulations for job well done.

Prof Dr Normah Omar,
Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia

In the name of the organizing committee, we are pleased to invite you to the APMAA 15th annual conference in Doha that will be hosted by the College of Business and Economics, Qatar University.

Since this is the first time for the APMAA conference to take place in the Gulf cooperation Council (GCC), we are enthusiastic and eagerly working at Qatar University with the APMAA board and international scholars to make the APMAA 2019 conference an international destination for Accounting and Finance scholars.

The main theme of the conference will be “Management Accounting and Finance in the 21st Century: Challenges and Perspectives”. Manuscripts covering any topical area of management accounting and finance will also be welcomed. They can be theoretical, teaching-based or practice-oriented.

Welcome Message from the Chair of the Board of Directors
of the Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association (APMAA)

The Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association (APMAA) holds its 15th Annual Conference (APMAA 2019) at Qatar University (OU), in Doha from November 2nd (Saturday) to 5th (Tuesday), 2019. The conference is organized by the College of Business and Economics (CBE), Qatar University, under the leadership of Dr. Khalid Al- Abdulqader and Dr. Mohammed Elgammal, Chairs of the APMAA 2019 Annual Conference Organizing Committee. This is the first time for APMAA to hold its annual conference in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Established in May 1981, the GCC is a political and economic alliance of six Middle Eastern countries: Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Oman. As everyone knows, Qatar is a high-income economy, backed by the world third-largest natural-gas reserves and oil reserves. The country is classified by the UN as a country of very high human development. Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Qatar University is the main state university in Qatar, hosting nine colleges Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Law, Sharia and Islamic Studies, Pharmacy, College of Health Science, and College of Medicine. QU currently boasts a population of over 20,000 students. The University has a growing number of specialists, Masters and Ph.D. programs, and enjoys multiple significant research successes. In fact, the university ranked at No. 393 in the 2018 QS World University Ranking. We, directors of APMAA, are all excited about having APMAA 2019 at Qatar University, the most respected university in Qatar

The Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association, founded in 2004, has grown into one of the worlds leading associations of scholars and specialists in the field of management accounting. The main goal of the APMAA annual conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners to exchange theories, ideas, techniques and experiences relating to all aspects of management and business accounting. Our annual conferences provide a very good opportunity for our members to interact face-to-face with experts from all over the world.

Qatar University applied to be the APMAA 2019 conference venue at the APMAA 2015 board meeting held at Warmadewa University Bali, Indonesia, and we unanimously approved. Immediately after receiving an approval notification, the conference organizing team at the CBE started to prepare for APMAA 2019.  I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the dedication of all organizing team members in making this conference an attractive one. I am confident that the APMAA 2019 conference, with the main theme of the conference, “Management Accounting and Finance in the 21st Century: Challenges and Perspectives, will fascinates participants from all over the world. There is no doubt that the conference in Doha will be one of the most fantastic and impressive meetings in APMAAs history
